This was our second trip to Switzerland. Our route was San Francisco (SFO) to Zurich Airport (ZRH). We traveled to Switzerland in late August, hoping to catch cooler weather and fewer crowds. Our trip involved flying in and out of Zurich, picking up a rental car, and traveling to Lake Lucerne for a quick two-night stay. Our next stop was driving to Gstaad, Switzerland, with a three-night stay at the Alpina Gstaad.
The Alpina Gstaad hotel sits up on a hill and welcomes guests through a discreet tunnel to an underground entrance with a ramp for easy access. Our GPS in the car had us passing the entrance twice, so beware you need to pay close attention to the entrance of the property. The VIP entry and design merge Swiss tradition with modern luxury, featuring a bright reception anchored by a 90-foot granite desk and an atmosphere that blends style with alpine comfort. As we drove into the tunnel and pulled up to the valet, it truly felt like we had entered a Bond movie; it was a true WOW moment.

The Alpina Gstaad is a modern, discreet hotel with 56 rooms and suites in Gstaad-Oberbort, overlooking the Saaneland ski village. The hotel features Swiss design, authentic architecture, local crafts, an herb garden, and an art collection. We selected this hotel due to its proximity to town, the scenic location, and the outstanding pools and spa.
Our balcony featured two cozy chairs and views of the countryside, including happy cows and horses. I loved taking my coffee onto the balcony in the mornings for the serene views.
Room Impressions
The Deluxe Room with Balcony was spacious and rich with details. The design and textures were cozy and elegant at the same time. Leather, cotton, wool, and metal elements were integrated into the furnishings. The super king bed was comfortable with premium beddings and pillows. We slept extremely well in this beautiful room.
Our bathroom had a single sink, a private water closet, and a shower/tub combo. The bathroom was efficient, but lacked the luxury component. That said, the robes and slippers were wonderful.
Restaurant Impressions
Another plus of this hotel is that it has five exceptional restaurants. Michelin-starred Executive Chef Martin Göschel supervises Martin Göschel, Monti, Megu, Swiss Stübli, and The Alpina Lounge and Alpina Terrace. We dined at three of the restaurants during our three-day stay.
Martin Göschel Restaurant-Guide Michelin rates one star
This is the signature restaurant and holds a Michelin rating of one star. We made our reservation before we traveled, which is recommended to ensure availability. The overall dining experience (three hours of courses) had both highs and lows. The focus on seasonal top-quality ingredients shines through in the dishes, the tasting menu was a combination of sea and land. While we enjoyed several of the seafood dishes, the land dishes were heavy and inconsistent.
Alpina Lounge & Alpina Terrace
We dined at this restaurant twice and enjoyed the casual (but expensive) menu options. The Alpina Cheeseburger and Fries were delicious. The Caesar Salad and Chicken Club Sandwich were both tasty. The service was excellent and the atmosphere was casual but elegant. We were delighted to enjoy live piano music while we dined. The cocktail menu was extensive and featured classics with some inspired offerings.
Breakfast
Served in the main dining room, guests had the option of al-a-carte ordering in addition to an ample fresh food buffet. The offerings included homemade granola, fresh fruits, eggs, veggies, salad, etc. We enjoyed the breakfast offerings; portions were ample and varied.
Six Senses Spa Impressions
I had seen a picture of the pool and spa at the Alpina Gstaad and fell in love with the idea of swimming in this beautiful pool. The Six Senses Spa did not disappoint. This lovely pool was a true sanctuary of peace and serenity. The pool has two large jacuzzis, lounge chairs, and a waterfall feature that provides for the ultimate pool experience. We did not receive any treatments during our stay, and the use of the pool and amenities was included with our stay.

Final Thoughts
The Alpina Gstaad Hotel did not disappoint. The hotel staff were warm and welcoming. The hotel was both beautiful and elegant, with no pretension. The location was ideal for exploring the town of Gstaad with its sublime shopping and food scene, all set at the base of the Alps. We would absolutely return to this beautiful hotel!
